What Are the Best Things to Do in Central Ohio This Fall? 2026 Guide

Fall is one of my favorite times to get out around Central Ohio. The weather is finally comfortable again, the leaves start changing and there seems to be something happening every weekend.

You could easily find a list with dozens of festivals and Halloween events, but that can become a little overwhelming. So instead, I pulled together some of the fall events, places and activities I think are actually worth knowing about, from major Columbus traditions to a few closer-to-home favorites around Delaware County, Dublin, Powell and Lewis Center.

Whether you want a pumpkin farm, an afternoon hike, a fall festival or just an excuse to explore someplace you have not been in a while, there is plenty to choose from this fall.

What Are Some of the Best Fall Events in Central Ohio in 2026?

There are more fall festivals around Columbus than anyone could reasonably fit into one weekend guide, so these are a few I would put near the top of the list.

Columbus Zoo Lantern Festival

The Columbus Zoo Lantern Festival runs Thursday through Sunday evenings from August 20 through October 25. More than 70 sets of illuminated lanterns fill areas of the Zoo after dark, and dinosaurs have been added to the displays for 2026.

This is one of those events that works for families but does not really feel like a children's event. I would put it on the list for adults too, especially once the evenings start cooling down.

Columbus Oktoberfest

Columbus Oktoberfest is September 11-13 at the Ohio Expo Center. It has become one of the larger September traditions in Columbus, with German food, music, dancing and plenty happening throughout the weekend.

Delaware County Fair

The Delaware County Fair runs September 19-26, with the Little Brown Jug scheduled for September 24. If you live in the northern suburbs, this is one of the fall events that is especially easy to make part of a weekend without driving across Columbus.

Orange Township Founders Festival

Closer to home, the Orange Township Founders Festival is September 27 from 2-5 p.m. at North Road Park in Lewis Center. Food trucks, vendors, pumpkins and family activities make this a nice smaller local alternative to some of the larger Columbus festivals.

Circleville Pumpkin Show

If you have never been to the Circleville Pumpkin Show, this is probably the classic Central Ohio fall festival. The 2026 show runs October 21-24 in downtown Circleville.

The event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and fills downtown with pumpkin displays, parades, food, rides, crafts and just about everything else you can turn into a fall festival. More than 100,000 pounds of pumpkins, squash and gourds are displayed each year.

Where Can You See Some of the Best Fall Color Around Columbus?

You do not have to drive to Hocking Hills to find good fall color. Some of the prettiest places are right here around Columbus, and several are easy to combine with lunch or another fall activity.

Highbanks Metro Park in Lewis Center is one of my favorites. The wooded trails and overlooks make it especially pretty once the leaves start turning. If you want something more relaxed, you can also walk the paved paths through Big Meadows instead of committing to a longer hike.

Sharon Woods Metro Park in Westerville is another easy choice, especially if you want trails that are convenient without making the outing feel like an all-day excursion.

For something a little different, Clear Creek Metro Park near Lancaster has more elevation and a much more wooded feel. The drive there is pretty in the fall too, which makes it easy to turn into a half-day trip.

Slate Run Metro Park near Canal Winchester combines trails with the nearby historical farm, and the Scioto Mile gives you a completely different fall view with downtown Columbus in the background.

Ohio's fall color timing changes a little every year depending on weather, so I would check the state's foliage updates before planning a specific weekend.

Where Are Some Good Pumpkin Farms and Fall Farms Near Columbus?

You could probably make an entire Central Ohio fall guide just out of pumpkin farms. Rather than list every one, I would start with a few that offer very different experiences.

Leeds Farm in Ostrander is a longtime Delaware County favorite with hayrides, zip lines, pedal carts and plenty of other activities. It is a good choice if you want the full fall-farm experience rather than simply picking out a pumpkin.

Lehner's Pumpkin Farm in Radnor is another Delaware County option with pumpkins and a long list of activities. It stays open through October 31.

Olentangy Caverns also has a Pumpkins & Fall Activity Area running from September 19 through November 1 in 2026, which makes it easy to combine a fall activity with a visit to the caverns.

For something completely different, visit Slate Run Living Historical Farm. The 1880s-style working farm gives you a look at how farm life and the harvest season once worked in Central Ohio. Admission is free, and I like that it feels more like exploring than attending an attraction.

What Can Adults Do in Central Ohio This Fall?

Fall activity lists tend to turn into pumpkin patches and things for kids pretty quickly, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season without borrowing a child. 😊

A walk at Highbanks followed by dinner in Powell or downtown Delaware makes an easy afternoon. You could spend an evening at the Zoo Lantern Festival, walk through Historic Dublin, visit the North Market Night Market at Bridge Park or see the seasonal displays at Franklin Park Conservatory.

The North Market Night Market at Bridge Park continues September 3 and 17 and October 1, 15 and 29 from 6-9 p.m. More than 30 vendors, live music and entertainment spill out onto the streets around the market.

Another good option is Harvest Blooms at Franklin Park Conservatory, running September 26 through November 1. The gardens are filled with thousands of pumpkins, mums and fall plantings, including two pumpkin houses.

What Are Some Fun Fall Activities With Kids?

If you do have kids or grandkids in tow, there are quite a few good choices without having to go very far.

Boo at the Zoo takes place October 3-4, 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25. It is intentionally more fun than scary and is included with regular Zoo admission. There are trick-or-treat activities, entertainment and Halloween-themed attractions throughout Adventure Cove.

Dublin's Halloween Spooktacular is October 15-16 at Coffman Park and includes a haunted trail, hay maze, crafts, music and other family activities.

Pumpkin farms are an obvious choice too, especially Leeds Farm, Lehner's and Olentangy Caverns. And if you want something simpler, sometimes a Metro Park and a picnic are plenty. Fall in Ohio gives you a pretty short window of weather that is neither freezing nor 95 degrees, so I try to take advantage of it while it lasts.

One of the easiest ways to explore Central Ohio is to combine two or three places instead of making one activity the whole point of the day.

I like outings like these because they also give you a much better sense of a community than simply driving through it. You see the parks, downtown areas, traffic patterns, restaurants and how people actually spend their time there.

What Makes Fall Such a Good Time to Explore Central Ohio?

When people think about choosing where to live, they naturally focus on the house. But the community around the house matters just as much.

Fall is actually a great time to explore Central Ohio because there is so much happening in the individual communities. Spend an afternoon walking downtown Delaware. Go to Bridge Park in Dublin. Hike at Highbanks and drive through Lewis Center and Powell. Visit Westerville and Sharon Woods.

You start noticing things that are harder to see from a map. Some areas feel busier and more walkable. Others give you more space. Some put you close to everything you use every week, while others may mean a longer drive but give you something else you value more.
